Helen Sheffield Federated Girls Club

Formed 1963

Our Story

In 1963, the Helen Sheffield Federated Girls Club was formed in support of our mission and to further provide resources for girls to ensure their success. The Club was led by Dr. Geraldine Pierce Zimmerman and named after the daughter of the second president of South Carolina State University, Mrs. Helen Raven Wilkinson Sheffield — a woman devoted to community work and the growth and development of young girls.

Purpose

The Club's membership is composed of girls in grades 9–12 from Orangeburg area schools who have been recommended by club members and area schools. The purpose of the Helen Sheffield Federated Girls Club is:

  • ‣To foster moral, intellectual, cultural, and spiritual training to its members
  • ‣To inspire and instill ideals of modern womanhood
  • ‣To promote an appreciation of the great traditions of pioneer women
  • ‣To teach the marvelous heritage of our race
  • ‣To preserve the health and beauty of the body
  • ‣To inspire the love of God, home, and all mankind
  • ‣To provide the kind of training and spirit of dedication needed in transition beyond high school
